Those learning to play Dixieland or learn new tunes should see our Dixieland Playalong Records table. (That page is part of a separate website within americanmusiccaravan.com, which has various tools to help you to get into the music.)

There are no commercially published Dixieland fake books. I wrote to several publishers offering to do one, but in vain. So here's mine: a bandstand-usable book that helps keep this music alive by enabling more musicians to learn and play the tunes. There are no definitive melody lines for some of these tunes, so I transcribed portions of the original recordings; some King Oliver tunes, such as Chattanooga Stomp and Snake Rag, are extremely difficult to work with, and melody lines often had to be interpolated rather than merely transcribed. Some famous solos such as Dodds' version of the classic High Society clarinet solo, Armstrong's out chorus to Cakewalkin' Babies, Mugsy Spanier's out chorus to Big Butter and Egg man have been transcribed, as have some classic breaks.

D-Cup Dixie Chords: Generally, the chords and routines will be the same as this book, but since I have found better sources, added many verses, etc., there are significant differences.

Lyrics: When there is space, I put lyrics at the bottom of the page. However, many of the best vocal tunes and female vocal show-pieces, are verse-chorus tunes with no space on the page. They're all on separate sheets, available free via eMail. See the Books page for details.

"I think your fake book is the best I've seen.  It's a shame that it's taken this long to get one out that is accurate.  You've really done a beautiful job with this one, and I am grateful to you for sending it to me.  I recommend it to anyone who is trying to learn the old tunes.  Many, many thanks."
--Dan Levinson (Leader of the Roof Garden Jass Band, clarinet and sax player on many trad CDs.)

Upgraded pages.
As I discover new sources, play the tunes in jam sessions and on gigs, or listen to classic recordings, I upgrade sheets. For example, when I did "If I could be with you", I decided that the verse wasn't important; as a result of playing it regularly, I changed my mind and made a separate page with the verse, then changed it again because the turnaround seems to be standard. I changed a few chords in "Do you know what it means..." When I did the Bb edition, I upgraded some pages. I upgrade both books at the same time, as time permits.

When I reprint a book, I include all the upgrades. Owners of previous printings can obtain the upgraded pages, in .pdf format via eMail free-of-charge.
